Los mayas de la península de Yucatán son el segundo pueblo mesoamericano de México en términos numéricos y son los herederos de la que es considerada como la civilización más deslumbrante de la América precolombina. Entre las regiones indígenas de México, la península yucateca ocupa un sitio privilegiado por lo que a riqueza humana y cultural toca. Asiento de una de las etnias más numerosas de la familia lingüística maya, la arbitraria división en tres estados de la república mexicana -Yucatán, Campeche y Quintana Roo- mal oculta la existencia de una matriz cultural común de antigua y recia raigambre mesoamericana. Diseminados en esas tres entidades políticas, y prolongándose incluso sobre el territorio colindante de Belice, los mayas constituyen hoy en día uno de los núcleos indígenas de mayor peso cuantitativo y cualitativo del México indio.
