Las lenguas indígenas no son únicamente métodos de comunicación, sino que también son sistemas de conocimiento amplios y complejos que se han desarrollado a lo largo de milenios. Son fundamentales para la identidad de los pueblos indígenas, la conservación de sus culturas, sus concepciones e ideas y para la expresión de la libre determinación. Cuando las lenguas indígenas están amenazadas, los pueblos indígenas también lo están.
La amenaza es la consecuencia directa del colonialismo y de las prácticas coloniales que dieron lugar a la aniquilación de los pueblos indígenas, sus culturas y sus lenguas. Como resultado de las políticas de asimilación, del despojo de tierras y de las leyes y medidas discriminatorias, las lenguas indígenas de todas las regiones se encuentran en peligro de extinción. Esta situación se ve agravada por la globalización y por el aumento de un reducido número de lenguas culturalmente dominantes. Los padres están dejando de transmitir cada vez más sus lenguas a sus hijos.
